4 Simple Ways to Upgrade Your Style Today

Updated: Jan 19, 2021

The devil really is in the detail when it comes to style. Too often, we overlook minute things we could do to look sharper, when we're stuck for time or a little low on cash. But you don't have to splash out on a brand-new wardrobe full of threads to make a change, just a few little pieces to get you looking your best will do the trick. And it's not rocket science either, there are simple little fashion hacks to rev up your style. Here are 4 men's fashion tips you can steal today to change up your style:

1. Customise it; Tweak it; Style it Up!

Last month, out for walkies through the City of the Tribes, I popped into Primark/Penneys and picked up a pretty oversized shirt. I loved the print; I hated the shape. At home, I tried it on and noticed how insanely long the tail and front of the shirt were. And as a supposed short sleeved shirt, the sleeves actually sat just at my elbow. Way too long, I'm giving it away, end of. Or was it? Not quite yet. I jazzed it up with a little French Tuck at the front and put a roll on the sleeve so it sits that little bit higher on my arm, closer to my shoulder, looking way more fitted. And boom, I love it! #BathrommSelfie

The same goes for jeans, pants, or even shorts. I regularly put a little pin roll into my shorts or if you're into it, go sock free and wear jeans rolled, with some neat slim footwear.

2. Watch Out!

I hadn't worn a watch in years. Not until my mom bought me a gorgeous, brown leather piece from Newbridge Silverware as a gift for my 30th birthday. From the moment I pop that watch on in the morning, I instantly feel just a touch more styled; just a little bit more put together. And no, you don't have to spend a fortune. Wether they're brand new, vintage, or second hand, you'll find classic wrist pieces for a range of budgets and tastes. Shop around, guys. Here are two of my favs from the guys at manlystuff.ie and Ted Baker London. The watch is classic, timeless, and will never go out of fashion. A daily staple you need in your life.

3. Girls Make Passes at Boys who wear Glasses!

Some people are not going to agree with me on this, especially the anti-hipster! But hey, I really love glasses, whether you need them or not! If you're going for a certain kind of aesthetic: classy, sophisticated, maybe a wee bit nerdy, glasses will give you an extra pop, and you can determine the style based on your face shape and even the colour you need for the look. Check these rounded specs below, also available from Ted Baker! Once again, a timeless accessory that's a savvy investment.

4. Diamonds are a [Boy's] Best Friend!

Well, it doesn't have to be diamonds, any kind of metal or precious stone may suffice, depending on what you're hoping to achieve. Taking a usually mundane, basic look, like camel shorts and a white tee with a pair of converse, for example, might be upgraded by popping on a leather wrist piece like this one from River Island.

Or these simple silver rings also available from River Island stores. I'm still on the fence when it comes to men's necklaces! When you boil it down all you're doing with any of these items is, adding that little extra touch. A good styling tip for choosing accessories is, does it over power the whole look or does it compliment it?
